My name is Galahad and I am 16 years old. I live in Meudon, in the Paris region, in France. I was fortunate to go to NZ in June and July 2019 at the Crusaders academy (IHPU) in Christchurch, New Zealand. I have played rugby for 11 years at the highest level. I am pleasantly surprised by the kindness and hospitality of the people who train inside the Crusaders, who are either the coaches or the players who are automatically integrated into the group despite the age difference. This internship allowed me to improve myself physically and technically. I was also given the opportunity to familiarise myself with the gym where I had done little prior. The coaches helped me improve lots of areas. It was a very great atmosphere and despite differences in language. My greatest wish is to be able to go there next year if possible to become a very enriching experience for me, both in terms of rugby and the human.
I have been at the Auckland Academy for 5 months. My rugby has progressed not only with the academy but also with the club I play with. We are taught by the same coaches as the local players and the academy is very well organised. The training is very detailed and I learned so much, it's very different from home. I decided to extend my stay by one year to continue my apprenticeship.
I had the immense honour of being able to stay for two months which was extraordinary to be able to do at the IHPU. First and foremost, this was the best and most rewarding experience I have ever had in my life.
Training sessions are Monday to Friday plus match on Saturday, you train 2-3 times a day. Everything is focused on the player's technique and his rugby and athletic qualities. You will do a lot of skill work and look at how to play the game in NZ which is based on speed. You will also do a lot of fitness and endurance games There are four weight training sessions per week.
You will train hard like professional, learn the game and the combinations of the Crusaders. Twice a week you train with your clubs and play Saturday. The game is 100 times faster than in France. Each week you will have the chance to attend the training of the Crusaders and to talk with them to take pictures and have autographs.
You will be able to discover new cultures and make friendships for life. You will also attend 3 games of Super 15 crusaders. Finally, this experience will change you for life at rugby level and at the personal level. You will meet extraordinary people, learn from the best - Canterbury, Crusaders coaches and former All Blacks will coach you and give you advice. If I have any advice to give you is do not to hesitate to make this experience everything is set up so that you can progress and become better.
I have just graduated from an intensive four-week internship at the Auckland Academy. During this stay I learned a lot, especially on the technical, physical (gym) and also cultural. I was able to visit Auckland, New Zealand beaches and attend a lot of rugby matches. It was really a good experience and if it was again I would do it again.
I had 4 weeks of rugby at the Auckland Academy. We had rugby and gym every day, I found the trainings shorter than in France but very detailed. I recommend this course. We also had the chance to visit New Zealand, the landscapes are varied, beautiful and different. We visited Waiheke and Rangitoto which are 2 islands that I recommend.
